Over 260 manufacturers make St. Clair County their home-base and provide over 11,000 jobs, nearly 20 percent of the county's workforce. They produce such commodities as automotive trim and parts, brass and copper tubing, paper products, tapes, and electrical components.
About a third of the county's employees are involved in the service industry, many of which are related to the multimillion-dollar tourism market. Others are employed in education, utilities, health care and government.
Retail also has a prominent place in the area's business environment with attractions such as the downtown's historic Main Street Port Huron and Birchwood Mall in Fort Gratiot. Downtown Port Huron has welcomed a unique blend of specialty shops, including trendy coffee shops, eating establishments, commercial offices and even a drugstore. Birchwood Mall is a popular destination that attracts millions of shoppers each year. It offers over 100 merchants as well as a 450-seat food court, children's play area and 10-screen theater.
