Created in 2000, The KidSAKE Foundation has partnered with organizations and individuals in middle Tennessee, Honduras, Indiana and now Michigan to serve women, children and communities through arts-based service initiatives. June, 2012 marks the launch of these initiatives in St. Clair County, Michigan, through a partnership for events with sponsors Dan and Staci Nichols of the Sail Away Café in downtown Port Huron.
Wednesday and Saturday evenings from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sail Away will host ‘Café Arts’ events beginning June 6th through July 11th. Arts events include poetry slams, improv nights, reader’s theatre and music. Each event is a fundraiser and is open to the public. The Sail Away Café is located at 231 Huron Ave., Port Huron, Michigan. Interested performers please contact Emily Rogers, KidSAKE Foundation Youth Ambassador, at: email@example.com to schedule a time slot. No age limit.
The Café Arts series at the Sail Away Café is scheduled to run performances for the 18+ crowd on Wednesday nights and Student/Family nights on Saturdays. All ages are encouraged to participate.
Performers will ‘pay to play’ by making a donation to KidSAKE. A ‘live’ jukebox will also take place in the evening when audience members make a donation for others to take the stage. Art and other donations will be featured in a silent auction throughout the run of the Café Arts events, culminating in a live auction during the closing entertainment showcase, Wednesday, July 11th. Fine Artists will be on hand creating during the events; fair trade chocolate, coffee and tea as well as Honduran original art will also be available for sale.
The event schedule is as follows:
Poetry Slam and other (short) written works: June 6, 9, 27, 30
Music: June 13, 16 and July 7
Theatre Improv & reader’s theatre (scenes): June 20 and 23
Variety showcase and live auction: July 11th (music, poetry, improv)
